Relaunching Gubns

Back from hiatus...

Dear reader:

Gubns is back in action—with a new mission, a new team and a new look! After a year of reflection, we re-evaluated: what worked, what didn’t, what do makers need, and in short, we decided to move away from a marketplace and towards building a community of likeminded creatives.

We want to preserve the best part of Gubns: discover new talents, bring makers together and help each other out. There is a real need for a platform thats brings together designers from around the world who are crafting incredible works of art, but too often in isolation. Gubns aims to be a space where answers to questions like these below, are one message away…

Know of product photographers who can shoot my new collection?
Just launched my website… how can I get user feedback?
How are full-time architects and makers managing their workload?
I’m hosting a pop-up and have space for collabs. Know anyone?

So, Gubns is relaunching as a space by and for its members. Rather than a marketplace for selling, it’s now a ‘connective tissue’ for architect-makers to connect, collaborate, get inspired, and support each other’s making journey.

New with Gubns:

We’re working on a new website. The online shop will be a directory, so visitors can buy and support makers directly—we take zero commission. We’ve also de-branded to lend more focus on the makers.

We’ve streamlined our offerings to give makers optimal support, whether that means by increasing visibility and sales, by matchmaking with likeminded institutions and galleries, or by hosting gatherings that foster inspiration or collaborations. New makers can apply here.

Gubns Group: Yuqiao, Emil, Natcha, Pete, Claire (UK) and Sera (US).

We’re now a grassroots effort run by Gubns Group—a relaxed, friendly group of volunteers who help brainstorm, give feedback and decide our next events. Any member can join and help steer what Gubns does and goes on to become. Reply to this email ([email protected]) if you’re interested in joining.

Coming up:

Gubns is hosting our first-ever event series, Living Room No. 1, where some of our London-based makers will be featuring their latest works and prototypes in an intimate home setting. RSVP and join us for a good time, good vibes all around.

Natcha Kucita’s Vessel of Light is taking part in a Christmas pop-up and group exhibition featuring the works of 5 diverse, multicultural ceramic artists with special one-off selections also on display.

In case you missed it:

Pete Davies launched London-based Studio Pete with work that explores the intersection between craft and technology, creating unique and bespoke pieces of design. The work draws on primitive forms and is often influenced by natural landscape processes.

Earlier this year, London-based designer and artist Yuqiao Guo launched her artisanal ice cream brand Matter at Hand, introducing unusual and seasonal flavours, and highlighting the artistic expression of her hands-on processes.

In November, Aimilios Davlantis Lo launched his design, engineering and prototyping studio, Minor Detail, in Bloomsbury, London. The practice actualises the most demanding and imaginative projects, ranging from scientific instruments to kinetic jewellery.
