Coming Up: Living Room No.3

Dear reader:

This month we are gearing up for the next edition of Living Room, our event series bringing creatives together for a curated exhibition in an intimate home setting.

📍 This time, Living Room No.3 will be hosted by Gubns members and designer couple Minor Detail and Matter at Hand at their workshop-home.

🎟️ Space is limited and tickets are first come, first serve. RSVP here to join us on Saturday March 30th from 16.00-20.00 in Bloomsbury, London.

Special programmes include a tour of Minor Detail’s in-house workshop and sampling of Matter at Hand’s ice cream churned on the spot.

Minor Detail is a high-precision engineering and manufacturing studio, while Matter at Hand is an artisanal ice cream shop conceived at the intersection of ice cream, art, and design.

Our newest members:

We’re excited to welcome new architect-makers and built environment professionals into our community! Hailing from London to Boston, our latest members vary in craft and studies, from metalwork jewellery to climate tech:

— Makers —

Laura Stargala (@laurastargala) is an artist, licensed architect, and founder of Of Here—the studio studies space making by combining existing building methodologies and intuitive on-site construction.

Karen Ko (@kko__study) is an architect and ceramicist seeding uncertainty in the making process and celebrating the physicality of natural materials.

Jaqlin Tan Lyon (@slumpwork / portfolio) is an architect and maker of handmade grotesque metalwork jewellery.

— Club —

Patch Pérez (@patchperez) is Head of Technology at VENTETE, an invention company; and teaches part-time on UCL's Design for Manufacture course. He graduated from Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL.

Hannah Both (@hannahashleigh_14 / portfolio) is a post-grad student from UCL’s Situated Practice.

Zach Sternberg (@sternbz / portfolio) is an alum of MIT’s integrated design and management program, a touring lighting designer, and now product lead in climate tech.

Ed Sear (@sear.ed) is a Bartlett architecture graduate working in set design for TV and theatre. He also sews things on the side.

What makers are making:

Sera Ghadaki and Haya Alnibari presented ongoing research into food-based bioplastics at the Pratt Research Open House in Brooklyn, NY. Their research “Reimagining Materials: Towards Sustainable Making with Bioplastics Across Art and Design” delves into the development of low-impact, biodegradable bioplastics through innovative formulations and applications across diverse creative disciplines including fashion and functional objects.

Yuqiao Guo was commissioned by Civil Architecture to make a diptych for their exhibition at Design Doha Biennial 2024. Aimilios Davlantis Lo designed and constructed a double-sided oak painting stand for the pair of paintings.

Sarmad Suhail presented his work at the VIOLENT BODIES exhibition hosted by Ugly Duck and Femanifesto. His drawing series ‘Post/hedonism’ explores the limits of self-expression between the ‘Omote/Ura’ (public/private) within conflicting Western and Pakistani cultures.

In case you missed it:

Living Room No.1 was our inaugural show-and-tell exhibition of works by architect-makers in an intimate home setting—this one, in Islington.

Pub Night No.2 brought together old and new faces for a casual catch-up at Spurstowe Arms in Hackney.

See you next time!
